The History of PTSD a.k.a Shell shock
Where did PTSD get it's name?
During WWI they called PTSD "Shell shock". They called it tis because in the trenches soldiers and nurses noticed that soldiers showed symptoms of PTSD when an artillery round a.k.a. a "Shell" landed next to them so they named it "shell shock". They later realized it wasn't just caused by a shell but by any traumatic event so they renamed it post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD for short.

In WWI how did they combat PTSD (Shell shock)
During WWI they knew very little about PTSD. If an officer usually in the trenches since that's where most the traumatic events occurred noticed a soldier had shell shock he was supposed to send that soldier to a nurse or doctor to be examined. But most the officers thought they were just being cowardly so they were either deserted or shot in front of the other troops as an example to show the other troops to not act cowardly.
